Many people wonder if there is a universal sign language used worldwide. In reality, sign language is not universal; different countries and regions have their own sign languages, much like spoken languages. For example, American Sign Language (ASL) is different from British Sign Language (BSL) and others.
Sign language is a fully developed natural language, capable of expressing abstract and complex ideas, emotions, and concepts just as effectively as spoken languages.
People often inquire about how children, especially those born to deaf parents or those who are deaf themselves, learn sign language. Children acquire sign language in much the same way they learn spoken language – through exposure and interaction with their caregivers and community.
There's a growing interest in whether learning sign language is beneficial for hearing people. Learning sign language can improve cognitive abilities, enhance communication skills, and foster inclusivity by bridging the communication gap with the deaf community. It can also be a valuable professional skill in many fields.
